Social Mentions (r/wallstreetbets)
Last verified
The platform reads a daily count of how often each screened company is mentioned on r/wallstreetbets and attaches it to the screener board as context — a read of retail attention, alongside the board’s other context signals (options flow, analyst clusters, insider flow, sector rotation).
What it measures
Once per day the platform pulls the prior complete day of r/wallstreetbets submissions from a public Reddit archive and counts, per company:
- Mentions — the number of distinct posts that named the ticker that day
(counted once per post, whether by cashtag
$TICKERor as a bare symbol). - Cashtag mentions — the subset of those posts that used the
$TICKERform (a higher-precision signal). - Score sum — the combined Reddit score of the mentioning posts.
- Mentions z-score — how unusual today’s mention count is versus the company’s own recent daily baseline. It abstains (shows nothing) until enough baseline days have accumulated, rather than reporting a number it cannot yet stand behind.
The day counted is a calendar day, not a trading day — weekend and holiday chatter is real and is captured too.
Bare (non-cashtag) mentions are only matched for four-and-five-letter symbols, so
short tickers like F, GM, AMD, or ARM are counted only when written as their
$TICKER cashtag — the mention count is a known-recall attention proxy, not a
complete tally.
Where it shows up
Names carrying recent mention data get a small, muted social chip on their
row on the screener. A company with no recent mentions simply shows
no chip — absence of a chip means “no recent attention”, never a fabricated zero.
The chip drops off entirely once the most recent mention is more than a week old
(a stale count is not a current attention read), and a count more than a day old
is dated on the chip (e.g. · 3d ago) so it never reads as live.
What it is NOT
This is context only, and it is ungraded. Retail-attention data never:
- decides which names make the screener’s deep-analysis set,
- feeds any conviction or sizing read,
- drives any of the screener’s setup archetypes,
- fires any alert.
Whether a mention spike carries any forward signal is an open research question the platform is set up to study, not a claim it makes today. The chip is there so you can see the attention, not so the platform can act on it.
Coverage
Mentions are tracked for the platform’s screener universe (the S&P 900 plus a handful of operator-added names). A day’s read is marked complete under normal volume; on an unusually heavy day the count can be marked partial (truncated), which is surfaced honestly rather than hidden.
